Wizards

As long as humans have told each other tales, magic has been a frequent element. And, who makes the magic? Wizards, witches, elves, fairies, trolls, and wood and water sprites make magic, as do “mere” magicians, which are even mentioned in the Bible.

But, wizards and witches get top billing, and wizards most of all. From Merlin, in the stories of King Arthur, to Harry Potter from the book and film series of the same name, wizards have always been a draw.

Wizards in modern fantasy are almost always driven by some quest or desire. This modern wizard is unlike the wizard of the older fairy tales and knightly epics. In the old tales, wizards merely helped the plot along by giving the hero a quest to pursue and equipping them for the trials they eventually face.
